WestJet - Canada's national low-fare airline.Westjet: Canada's Answer to Boring FlightsWestjet is a Canadian airline based in Calgary that provides 'no-frills' flights but also serves up a dish of humour on every trip. There may well be a corporate policy at Westjet that a sense of humour is mandatory along with casual hospitality that is the trademark that is also Westjet. As one travelling companion put it: "They are so professional, they can relax and do their job very, very well". This is not to say that Air Canada does not provide a shining example of professionalism, but sometimes, they can be just a little too professional for the likes of seasoned travellers.One of the things that make Westjet unique in Canadian airspace is their jokes; REALLY bad jokes that are all "G" rated, but so corny all they need is a little butter and salt. If you are lucky (or unlucky depending on your perspective), you might get three or four groaners on a single flight. If you are delayed on the tarmac, you might even get a song and if a member of the crew has a birthday, rest assured that you will be invited to join in a chorus of "Happy Birthday". Anybody who has flown Westjet more than twice can be coaxed into a story that starts something like "One time on a Westjet flight, the flight attendant..." Having flown enough miles with Westjet to cover the cost of one of their signature 737-200 craft, I have probably heard most of the comments, jokes and puns that make even long flights just a little more enjoyable. On flights originating in Canada, the safety speech needs to be delivered in both English and French that takes 2 to 3 minutes of the flight attendant's time – the one where they tell you how to buckle the seatbelt, and how to put on the oxygen mask. The sad fact is less than 1% of the passengers listen to the speech, so on a Westjet flight from Calgary to Vancouver, the purser delivered the entire 3 minute speech in just under 20 seconds with the other flight attendants keeping up with the demonstration as he spoke. He not only did so in English, but was able to repeat the speech in French in the same time frame. Not only did we listen, we cheered! The following comments are attributed to the Westjet team from coast to coast: "This is a pre-boarding announcement only. Anybody travelling with small children, or travelling with somebody acting like a small child, or if you wish you were a small child, please come forward now so we may assist you." "...if you have more carry-on bags than arms, or if you need two people to carry your carry-on luggage, please see us at the check-in counter" "... to fasten the seatbelt, place the flat metal part into the clasp and pull on the loose end of the belt. Of course, if this is the first time you have ever fastened a seatbelt, you are either under three, or have been living on a different planet..." "There may be 50 ways to leave your lover, but there are only six ways to leave this aircraft..." "Smoking is not permitted on any Westjet flight. If we see you smoking, we will assume you are on fire and take appropriate action" "Captain Bob has turned off the seatbelt sign so you are free to move about the cabin. We do ask that you remain inside the aircraft, as opening the doors at 10,000 metres causes a bit of a draft." "My name is Purser Harry and if you have any questions or problems it is my job to assist you. Simply write the question or problem on a $20 bill and give it to me so I have a written record of your concern." "...please wait until the plane comes to a complete stop and the captain had turned off the seatbelt sign before unbuckling your seatbelt. This means you Sir, in seat 16C! We now have a new electronic system that lights up when somebody unbuckles too soon." (at least 20 seatbelt clicks were heard as people re-clasped their belts, immediately after the announcement). "On behalf of everyone at Westjet, we trust you had a pleasant flight. If this has been a bad experience, remember this has been Air Canada flight 666..." As the plane came to a steady stop at the terminus in Calgary, the Captains' voice came over the intercom "Whoa, big fella, whoa!" At the end of a flight into Kelowna that included an elementary school class: "... as you depart, please remember to take all of your belonging, including all of your children" "We know you have choices out there, so we are glad you chose Westjet. Nobody loves you or your money, more than Westjet" "Thank you for flying Westjet. We strive to meet your expectations, but if we have not done so, we simply ask that you lower your expectations." Westjet Airlines has destination and departure points in the USA, including Los Angeles, Fort Lauderdale, Palm Springs, New York, Orlando, San Francisco and Tampa, which is good news for Americans tired of boring flights. Have a pleasant flight!
